DOEE has received an EPA grant to help District automotive repair shops save money while reducing land, air, and water pollution. Be the first to hear about and sign up for this program to receive FREE on-site technical assistance and training for your employees. Space is limited.

Who Should Attend?

Auto mechanics, shop owners and managers, fleet managers, garage managers, environmental stakeholders interested in vehicle maintenance regulations, requirements and best practices


What to Wear?

While a majority of the workshop is indoors in the auditorium, we will be touring outside.  Please wear boots, sneakers, outdoor attire (dress for the weather).  If you need assistance, please call (202) 535-1939.


The Washington Metropolitan Auto Body Association (WMABA) and the U.S. National Arboretum are partners this year. For the first time, DOEE and USDA staff will conduct a tour of Hickey Run Outfall; attendees will see the environmental impact of stormwater on local waterways.

Mary Lynn Wilhere

With more than 25 years of experience, Ms. Wilhere assists businesses to implement sustainable best practices and reduce their environmental impacts.  Ms. Wilhere splits her time between business outreach and sustainable landscaping policy.

Richard Olsen

Director, U.S. National Arboretum, USDA

Dr. Olsen is a recognized international leader in the public garden
arena, providing his scientific expertise and practical knowledge to multiple national and international arboreta,
urban forestry groups, and professional associations.

 

Scott Aker

Head of Horticulture and Education

U.S. National Arboretum

 Mr. Aker is Head of Horticulture and Education at the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington DC.  He manages curators, technicians, educators, and horticulturists and provides oversight for some of the most notable plant collections in North America.

Jacob Zangrilli

Environmental Protection Specialist, Watershed Protection Division, DOEE

Mr. Zangrilli is the lead inspector in the Water Quality Division and has eight years of experience in conducting inspections of industrial and commercial facilities throughout the District. 

Victoria North

Environmental Protection Specialist, Hazardous Waste Branch, Toxic Substances Division, DOEE

Ms. North has over nine years of experience providing outreach information related to hazardous waste to a variety of businesses.

Clara Elias

Partnerships & Environmental Conservation Branch, Watershed Protection Division, DOEE

Ms. Elias is the stormwater pollution prevention coordinator for DOEE’s Stormwater Management Division where she provides outreach, education, and compliance assistance. She has over 12 years of experience in environmental protection and conservation, and holds a MS in Ecology from the University of California Davis. 

Stephen Ours

Chief, Permitting Branch, Air Quality Division, DOEE

With a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia, Mr. Ours has more than 18 years of experience implementing air quality permitting and regulatory programs

Olivia Achuko

Environmental Engineer, Air Quality Division, DOEE

Ms. Achuko has more than 25 years of experience working as a permit engineer for DOEE. In addition, she is the small business representative responsible for helping businesses understand at air quality regulations for specific sectors such as the auto body sector.

Manhole covers and drainage structures: Uncovering the Unknown


Automotive shops often have underground structures designed to prevent the pollutants from entering city sewer systems known as best management practices or BMPs.  Many facilities have BMPs on their property that they are unaware of.  We will discuss why BMPs are installed, how they function, and how understanding your facility’s drainage system can protect the District’s waterways.
